How to Clean the Shower

I consider my shower and bathroom a sanctuary. Taking a long hot shower or relaxing soak in the tub where I finally can have a moment to myself is one of my favorite things to do. I just can’t relax as well if the tub or shower is dirty.

Here are some tips to keep your shower stall, glass shower door, and shower tile clean and shining for a long time.

Shower Stall

Shower stalls that are made of fiberglass or ceramic tile and have shiny surfaces. The fiberglass can be cleaned by mild detergents or liquid soaps and non-scratching pads. Scratching pads will mar the surface of fiberglass.

Gray scum or rings in the basin are result of hard water and bar soap. A water softener will remove all the problems of ring formation. Ammonia based sprays, vinegar or baking soda removes the soap scum.

Cleaning the Shower Head

Shower heads: Shower heads need to be cleaned often. If the shower head becomes clogged, it may be due to hard water or rust deposits.

Try removing the shower head and seeing if there are small deposits in the filter that you can remove. You might be able to remove the deposits by soaking in vinegar or citrus solutions for half an hour and cleaning. Spraying the solution inside the head may also do the trick.

Removing Soap Scum

Soap scum is difficult to remove. It leaves a white film on the floors and glass shower doors. If it is possible to change to liquid soaps, it is a better alternative. Changing your soap will reduce the frequency of removing soap scum.

Removing Mold and Mildew

Mildew is a living organism. The black spots around the grout are an indication that the mildew is starting to grow. Mildew will be killed by chlorine based or hydrogen peroxide based solutions. These solutions cut through the mildew and completely overcome it.

You do not need to scratch or rub. One to three applications of mildew solutions may have to be done.

Cleaning the Shower Curtains

Shower curtains become greasy with oils from soaps. Dirt spots also are deposited on the curtains. Removal becomes a tricky business. The mildew may form on the curtain.

Soak the curtains in salt water or rub with lemon juice before putting them in the washing machine. Toss it in the washing machine using warm or hot water and add 1 cup of bleach to the water. The plastic curtains may easily be washed with commercial plastic sprays.

Cleaning Glass Shower Doors

Shower glass panels and mirrors are best cleaned when dry. Rub mirrors with an old newspaper, or lint free cloth to clean them effectively.

Here is another really good tip I’ve tried myself- Apply rain-x to your clean glass shower doors (follow manufactures directions as if you were applying it on your windshield)

When taking a shower the water will just run down in sheets, you won’t get hard water spots or soap scum building up on the glass, and your shower doors will shine like new for 6 months or more. (Be careful here and don’t spill any on the shower floor)
